New Riff Bourbon
Intro: From New Riff’s Website - New Riff Distilling’s core Bourbon expression is a genuinely high-rye, full bodied whiskey offering savory, spicy character. Building upon America’s 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act—already the highest quality standard for aged spirits in the world—New Riff Bourbon is Bottled In Bond Without Chill Filtration. Featuring a mash bill of non-GMO grains at 65% corn,30% rye, and 5% malted barley, it represents a new riff on Kentucky’s most hallowed whiskey traditions. Aged four years in 53-gallon toasted and charred new oak barrels, there are no shortcuts taken in our production. All New Riff whiskeys are made with the full sour mash Kentucky Regimen; all carry an age statement, and are always bottled without chill filtration.
Review: the nose, right out the bottle the nose is amazing. Full of rich notes like the oakiness of the rickhouse and vanilla. In the glass...not as much. It mellowed out a bit while in the glass.
The first sip...nothing...yet...mmmm...a touch of spice. Wow! Rich oaky notes and vanilla that’s really nice and refreshing. Second sip...this is a well balanced bourbon! But if I had to guess, I would say they are using a level 4 char on the barrel inside. To get this color and that oaky note you have to get a deeper char. To get the exchange of bourbon in and out of the wood, they probably aged it high in the rickhouse. Maybe medium to high, I’d say. It’s not hot but it is peppery.
Is it worth the $?
Yes. It’s $39.99 for this one. Is it a daily drinker...no. I can nearly buy 2 Eagle Rare bottles for this price. That being said, I can’t wait until I get to try the single barrel…I knew I should’ve bought that bastard when I was in liquor barn! Who should buy this one? Anyone. This is the best offering of a new distillery to hit the market with their own product that I have ever had…most are sourced and most taste similar because they come from two other distilleries generally who make large batches. I wonder if Castle and Key will give good competition to the new comers with their own spirit!
