Intro:  From Buffalo Trace's website:

Eagle Rare Bourbon Whiskey is masterfully crafted and carefully aged for no less than ten years. Every barrel is discriminately selected to offer consistent flavor but with a seemingly individual personality. Eagle Rare is a bourbon that lives up to its name with its lofty, distinctive taste experience.

Eagle Rare is one of Buffalo Trace Distillery's staples, made from mash bill #1 and aged to 10 years.  When I dove head first into my Kentucky heritage of bourbon collecting, it didn't take long to determine that Eagle Rare stood on a pedestal above the competitors as the 'go to' drink in my bar.  This speaks volumes, considering my bourbon bottle count has reached 175 and is racing towards 200 like a Jamaican Olympic runner!

Eagle Rare has a pleasant nose that is not so delicate you forget it is a bourbon.  I appreciate the slight astringency that help open the sinuses to take in the full aroma, but is not overpowering in the least.  You can detect some of the vanilla and cinnamon flavors before ever tasting it.

This is one of the few bourbons, in my opinion, you can hold in your mouth like a piece of hard candy without being overpowered by the heat.  Much like the nose, the taste of this bourbon is very smooth and flavorful with a subtle burn to the tongue and lips just to remind you it is still a 90 proof spirit.  In no way is it offensive and holds a terrific aftertaste on your entire tongue minutes after it transits your gullet.  Along with the cinnamon and vanilla notes, I taste some citrus as well.  The finish is smooth and leaves you clinging to your glass trying to fight the urge to drink it too quickly.  Drop a cube into your glass and it mellows out the flavors and nose that much more.  This is easily one of the best bourbons on the market...bravo Buffalo Trace!

Is it worth the $?

$22.99 is what I paid at the Navy Exchange.  The average price I have witnessed in local liquor stores is about a $10 markup.  Either way, this product is liquid gold and well worth the price.  This is a 10 year old bourbon from a legacy distiller for as affordable a price as you will ever find.  I typically buy this stuff 3 or 4 bottles at a time and it is what fills my decanter atop my bourbon bar.  Eagle Rare, you are my shameless mistress!
